Parshat Naso 5773–Shabbat Torah Study–Don’t be a show off!

Naso is the Torah’s longest Parasha and culminates with the dedication of the Mishkan and the gifts of the princes of the 12 tribes. No effort or expense was spared in building the Mishkan and the same could be said for the dedication. Each prince, in succession, could have brought more than the one who preceded him to show his own personal wealth and greatness. Yet, in excruciatingly repetitive detail, the Torah describes that each prince brought exactly the same thing! Instead of listing the gift once and then listing each of the names, the Torah recites the full extent of the gift 12 times. It is human nature to be competitive and try and out do your neighbor. Yet, no prince tried to out do the other. Instead, each acted out of total humility and respect for others. So important are these values that the Torah spends columns making an example of these virtuous men and their exemplary behavior.

Naso contains a number of interesting subjects, including: the nazarite laws , the laws of sotah (test of adultery) and the Birkat Kohanim (Yevarechecha, etc. priestly benediction). This Shabbat we learn from Ruth Bergman who will be discussing the nazarite laws and the most famous nazarite—Samson. It promises to bring the house down. 10:00 a.m.

Look for the signs for the precise location. Come as you are and stay as long as you like for this great study session. We finish in time for the Rabbi’s sermon for those who are interested in that as well.

Shabbat Shalom,
