Shabbat Tazria- Parshat HaChodesh 5776–Clean up your speech and your house. You don’t want Tzaras or Tzuros

We are working our way to Pesach. Rosh Chodesh Nissan (not the car, but the first month of the Jewish Year) and the month of Pesach begin this evening! The first Seder is just 2 weeks from tonight!

This is Shabbat Tazria which discusses Tzaras, an affliction in biblical times thought caused by evil speech or gossip. At its root, evil speech is the result of haughty or arrogant behavior, when we act in the misbegotten belief that we are better than someone else or we feel better when we compare ourselves more favorably to others.

We are especially cautioned to watch our speech and to clean up our acts.

With Pesach approaching, this is also a time when we are to be cleaning out our homes to remove the chametz. Chametz is anything with leavening—symbolic of arrogance as Pesach and matzah remind us of humility. We are to be eliminating even the smallest crumb of chametz from our homes and every word of gossip from our speech.

Any coincidence that Tazria and Pesach preparations fall in proximity?

This Shabbat, Rabbi Shere will teach us. 9:45 a.m. Come as you are. Stay as long as you like.

Thought: The Rabbis comment that Shabbat Ha-Chodesh is also a time to be Chadash—it is a month of renewal. If you have not tried our Shabbat Torah Study before, please do. Try something Chadash on Shabbat HaChodesh. Make this one of your new, new year’s resolutions. We have a growing community of learners. You do not need to have come to any previous Torah Study sessions to feel comfortable and welcome.

Shabbat shalom,

Paul
